Did you see the link above with the self tuning guitar feature out by Gibson? Turn a knob, fucking thing tunes itself.

    http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/2007/Gibson-Self-Tuning.html LOL I'd buy it. ;)

Yeah, that's what I would do, and save a couple hundred bucks in the process. Nothing wrong with learning chords by a book.

Wonder if there is computer software that will help in learning guitar?

I picked up and have started a piano program with my daughter; so far it's been pretty good.

How's the guitar coming along? I found a pretty good video lesson online and the one below it is from one of their performances. Rodrigo Y Gabriella:

Thanks. When I have time to eat, sleep, and breathe, I take the time to do that. LOL! I don't have much time for anything else, especially once school starts.

Well, it did take me a while but let me just assure everyone that this was the thread I've used to learn A LOT about the purchase. Ultimately, I want to see if I like it so I didn't want to spend alot. I also wanted to learn ASAP and hence why I chose the Domh's recommendation of the Fretlight.

Bought from Ebay, B stock, 219. Not too bad. :)

I still want to thank ALL of you because if I DO like it, and I DO click, I will use the WEALTH of information from all of your posts.

So thank you all so much!

    Leon,

Don't let these guys blow smoke and cloud your vision. There is a down side to learning the guitar.

When I was a tyke about your age, my wife bought me a guitar and signed me up for lessons at the "Y." I had often expressed an interest in learning to play.

When I went for my first lesson, I sat down with the guitar in my lap. The guy behind me leaned forward and said in a low, husky voice, "You have a classic neck." I thought he was hitting on me, but I learned later he was commenting on my (musical) instrument.

After three or four months, I had mastered the chording for Red River Valley. My audience (the wife and kids) soon tired of hearing Red River Valley and I learned that I was a much better engineer than musician. The guitar soon fell into disuse.

    Forewarned is forearmed.

    Sweet! Great news, man!

Just follow the directions and learn to play stuff that makes you feel like a musician and like you are actually playing music as quickly as possible... that will provide the impetus to keep at it. Find songs you like and learn them. I was lucky... when I was learning I was on a Dylan kick and all his songs are in 4-5 chords. I learned 50 songs in the first 6 months of playing and that kept me going.

    Best advice I can give?

PLAY EVERY SINGLE DAY, EVEN IF IT IS FOR JUST 5 MINUTES.

If you can get 30 minutes in every day, you will be a very solid guitarist in under a year.
