It's heartening to see that she's now working on the cold case of the "boy in the box," a heartbreaking story out of Philadelphia. In 1957 the body of a boy aged 3 to 6 was found in a cardboard box. There has been a ton of police work trying to track down the killer, but to no avail.

Today is the first I heard about that crime. If she cracks that case, it'll be about her third over 12 months.

They were able to extract mitochondrial DNA in 1998.

Did they do that for the Boy in the Box? Or are you just making a statement re the time they tried it out? I've never tested mtDNA.

I was referring to the boy in the box. A volunteer group that formed to continue investigating this case (some members are retired police who worked the case) got a court order in 1998 to exhume the body and get a DNA sample. They managed to get mitochondrial from the boy's teeth.
