Yasser Arafat's top deputy said the armed uprising against Israel has been a disaster for the Palestinians and must be stopped, declaring it has led to the "complete destruction of everything we built."

The blunt comments by Mahmoud Abbas, one of several potential successors to the politically weakened Arafat, are the harshest criticisms a senior Palestinian figure has leveled at militants since violence erupted in September 2000

Problem is he is Arafat's deputy, and teh groups now doing the bombing (Hamas, etc.) no longer pay much attention to Arafat.

How can one stop madness with reason? Calls for anything will fall on dead or soon to be dead ears. We must just sit back and watch some Palestinian fanatics attempt to fight a war of attrition with an equally determined foe that dwarfs them in resource and number. Certainly there is little that can be done to prevent terror bombings, but there is little that can be done to prevent tanks. It seems a war of attrition to me so if that does not change it is a war that certainly will come to an end. It is just depressing to see it play out.

    Well, cooler heads prevail?

Well, the uprising has been extremely costly to both the Israelis and Palestinians. The Israelis have had the worst economy they have ever had since the 1950s and the Palestinians are suffering massive propery and so much of the infrastructure they built has been destroyed..... The playing field is now taken up by the Israeli and Palestinian hawks... Can the moderates prevail? Maybe? Maybe? I hope so...
