    That technology has been around since the 70's. I remember an episode of "That's Incredible!" where a guy had a module the size of a pack of cigarettes that sensed cars ahead of it and braked if necessary.

    VW in the 70's had a concept track that simulated a highway and had a convoy of Vanagons with no driver running around it. It used stereoscopic cameras to sense what was in front and a SONAR type device on the drivers side to sense a special guard rail to keep it in the lane.
