NASA unveils plan to test asteroid defense technique - CNN.com

What if they successfully redirect the asteroid? And then that redirected asteroid impacts a much larger asteroid that it would have never hit, causing the larger one to head towards Earth. Then NASA determines that the larger one is too big to move. Would we have been better off leaving well enough alone?

Don't you just love Chaos theories? :D

If you hit the object and change its' velocity by a mere centimeter/second six months before it hits, Earth will pass out of the target zone before the asteroid crosses our path.

We still have a couple Saturn V vehicles, Project Icarus anyone?

I'm counting on Harry Stamper and his deep drilling team to handle matters.
