    It is a really magnificant collection. And amazing as the photographs are, it is equally amazing that he was able to get the plates out of Russia intact in 1918. Must have been an enormous amount of stuff, thousands of fragile glass negatives.

    The Empire that was Russia before the Soviets was rich and resplendant in culture and history. Way back when, in college, I took a course in Russian history. It was utterly fascinating and amazing to us, children of the Cold War, which was still in full swing in the early 80's, that the country that was an object of scorn and even hatred in the US had such a wonderful and proud heritage.
