Ignore them, pcy, they are just trying to confuse everyone.

I am trying to work on an integration, a gateway of sorts, between this forum and newsgroups.

I've got hurdles and bumps but it's doable.

One question remains is do we want something like that. Was screening through some of them and was like blown away by the bullshit that exists there.

Perhaps it wasn't such a great idea.

USENET Newsgroups tend to be filled with crap these days. However there are good private servers out there. You just have to have connections to find them...:)

Usenet is decidedly a no man's land, but there are some real jewels there...how to filter out all the porn and seriously whacked stuff should prove to be challenging...if you want to build a true gateway. If you want to build a list of worthwhile NG's, you may need some human volunteers to help sift through all the crap and digout the jewels. If you want to go in that direction, I'll volunteer some time.

I have to rethink the whole approach.

I've wanted a gateway for a while but that's because I remember a different USENET world. I remember participating in soc.russia, and soc.ukraine, along with a few middle east stuff, way before the web.

These days, omg... I should have looked first before I begain spending days on the project.

It's not the same.. I used to live on USENET before the kiddies and spammers found it. It's nothing but noise now. :(

    Yes... :(

Two shockers in one day, if I can even compare the two.

I love Usenet. It IS a major pain, though. I read about 15-20 groups on a daily basis (yes I'm just a reader, not a porn-downloader...)

You can get rid of a lot of spam, trolls, cross-posted crap and irrelevant discussions with judicious use of filters. I rarely use the killfile because I have a good aptitude for manually ignoring people, but it can come in handy as well. I use Xnews for my reader; it's really excellent, I don't even use half the features.

There are some ngs that are basically hopeless and stupid, true. The ones I read, usually the problem is volume; some get 400+ posts a day (like rec.sport.soccer during the WC) and no way I'm going to wade through that.

Yep, if we can mirror quality NG's here without the VB having to run the filter would be fandamtastic. Maybe the mirror should be limited to suggested and reviewed groups?

That's what I was thinking. I am not using anything to filter and to code something like that, I don't think it's worth it.

However, if you can find NG's that are decent, interesting, and do not have a lot of spam and crap... Well, then we may be in business.

I'd be happy to work on submissions...the jewels that you and Biker referred to are still there, they're just hard to find.
