I remember a time...

    Steve Is that it, then?

...when websites were designed so the text loaded first so you could read the useful content while the graphics caught up.

I remembera time when you didn't need ActiveX enabled simply to retrieve the news from a news web site.

Someone needs to coin a term for websites that has the same connotation that "bloatware" does for software. I mean, c'mon people, just because some people do have broadband doesn't mean you have to crap up your website with all sorts of bells and whistles that do nothing to enhance the content and only serve to slow down the loading of the pages.

Frankly, even with broadband, if a site is taking more than 5 seconds, I'm outta there!

Exactly, just because you can put all the pretty play things on your page does not mean they are needed, welcome, or even contribute to its value.

Porn is, of course, the exception. Why, I recall hours in front of my computer with a 9600 baud modem and AOL 3.something, d/l porn into the wee hours of the night.

It's even better with broadband ;)

it's the bells and whistles that are driving the technology today. look at HDTV, WOW! what a great picture! but then you realize you're still watching all the same old crap.

    How about 'Couldabeen Websites'.

    Whats that?
    It's a Couldabeen Site.
    What is a Couldabeen site?
In the time it takes to load all this crap, I Could A Been downloading porn or solving world hunger.

    Techie2000 The crowd would sing:

I use Mozilla so no ActiveX here. Text used to load before images back when we didn't have packages like Frontpage (eww...) to let any idiot with a computer design a website. Real men hand code their websites!

I hate FrontPage. Whenever I decide to try something web-related, I always fire up HomeSite.

I'm sort of forced to use FP for my company's website. I don't have the time, unfortunately, to learn another product <strike><small>because I waste so much of it here at GA</small></strike> and we don't have the money in the budget to bring in someone who can do it better.
