Glad to see we are back up and running Ethics.

Have you had an opportunity to review usage statistics? Is the ISP correct with the December to date usage figure of greater than 12GB?

I am still talking things over with the ISP. They are trying to accomodate but I am seeking ways in which to measure this, even if I have to slap scripts on the web site.

Well the outage brought a few things to mind, at least in my case, and I would like to raise a few issues here if it's ok.

    1. I am not comfortable with Ethics absorbing all the costs of running this place. This is not to imply that we should have a pay service, HOWEVER I very much want a mechanism in place where those who wish to contribute to the cost of running this site can make donations. At this point Ethics I think my request is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Give us a way where we can help if we are so inclined.

    2. Damn I missed this place, and the people that *live* here, all of you...without exception. Which got me wondering, what if something happened to one of us? If someone simply disappears from here the assumption is they likely just quit the site. I don't think this is a valid assumption.

Let's say I drop dead tomorrow (don't everyone cheer at once). How would anyone here know? Complicated problem and I have no clue how to address it.

I guess I could show the wife this site and ask her to put up a brief post if something of a serious nature did happen to me. Other than that we are kinda in the dark about one another in this respect.

I've grown to hold every person here in very high regard and am just a bit confused how to handle that on a personal level I guess.

ShinyTop I know what is right or wrong!

I have given my son the url's and names of people to notify if something happens to me. And to those who say this is only on line, well fine, I actually feel many of you are my friends. I care what happens to you and if you don't care what happens to me I don't want to know.

    I wholeheartedly agree.

Back in the old days, when I was smitten with the glory that was DSLR I sent 20 smackers to Justin, just to say 'well done, I want to support this!'.

I feel MUCH more strongly about this site, and I know I am not alone.

Ethics, its time to setup a way for folks to contribute anything from a dollar to 20 or so.

Also, I have a full T1, if hosting issues are coming around biting your ass.

ANd here, I was feeling bad and that the outage was all my fault, for posting the pictures. So, then I thought, well maybe it's becasue of the pictures that are in other forums that we don't use anymore . . . A lot goes through your mind when ya' can't be here. LOL I was like all naked and stuff. Even on days that I do not come here, I know it's there, and then it was gone AKKKK

Absolutely agree with the first point. I'd happily contribute to ensure this site stays alive and prosperous for a long time. Perhaps something like "tool points" at DSLR, except they would be an alternative to thumb dollars to allow us to upload avatars, or something like that. Ok, clearly not well thought out, but I'm sure there's a way we can contribute in a fun way.

The second point I also agree with, but other than Shiny's solution, I know of no ideal way to implement something like this. I remember this sort of thing always used to happen at DSLR -- someone would disappear for a week or so and the next thing you know everyone is posting "Where is so and so" threads! I believe we saw our first one here recently when Jim was wondering where BTDude was. Perhaps a feature in the member profile that allows one to indicate if they will be away for an extended period? A privite contact list that Ethics keeps so members can be checked up on? Neither is a viable solution in my mind. I think the concern is a relative thing -- some of us visit every single day, some of us don't. Therefore, some will be missed before others are. And what length of time away constitutes a worrying situation? In summary, I think Shiny has the best solution -- each member should, if they desire, give the URL and perhaps a couple e-mail addresses to a family member or friend to contact if something should happen. Those who don't wish to be found if they disappear, just wouldn't do so.

What I want to say is really not like me, since I am the last person to get emotional.

What has transpired over the last 24 hours has been shocking. Not in the reasons of ISP outage, but because of it.

The outpour of support was just so overwhelming that I got all soft and stuff and it made me realize, after each passing hour of downtime what GA has become. The emails from many of you were astounding, and while I realize how special GA was and has been for me, I had no idea how off I was in my assumption. I underestimated the closeness, the comraderie, the friendship, and yes, family.

I felt like Sally Fields with "You like me, you really Like me!". Substitute "ME" for "GA" and you get the picture.

It's more than that though, people feel personal responsibility as to what GA is and what it will be. To me, that is an enormous message which means more to me than anything I've worked on/for. It is truly a remarkable feeling to be in the midsts of people such as yourselves and I am truly, and sincerely honored to know all of you. I mean this.

I am the last guy to show feelings also, something to do with the Slavic culture but to hell with it.

Ok, that emtional stuff aside :)) there will be A LOT of changes under the hood, folks, to insure this never happens again. Here are the steps that are being taken:

    1. One of the lurkers of this forum, who rarely posts, but who relies on the education from the posts has offered us a server that is amazing and would cost about 3,500 dollars per month if I were to subscribe to something like that. We are talking gigs and gigs of hard drive space, and open bandwidth usage.

All for free or rather, he will be paying the bill.

He mentioned that all of your posts are priceless. The information it teaches his kids (he is a teacher) can not be converted in to money. The parents of these kids who read this forum were all worried that we would never be up again. I had no idea about how big we are until yesterday!!!

Sooooo, while I TRULY appreciate your financial donations, I do not think we need it, yet. When we do, I will make a point on it and you can donate if you wish, but it will be purely voluntary with no playing favorites for payers and non-payers (no one would know anyway, except people who need to know).

    2. I will be in the process of exporting and migrating us from one server to this new server I spoke of. I don't know what the time frame is but I expect to move by January. In the meantime, we DO have the space to play with, a lot more than we had before.

    * Things we DO need.

With a DEDICATED server I need a volunteer who knows MySql, PHP, UNIX, and NT. There won't be a lot of work involved but I need someone who knows deamons, cronjobs, how to back up databases, etc... I guess I am asking for a hobbyist with some time. If no one can do it, I will get someone to do it for us but wanted to get someone from the inside first.

Anyone good with homepages? :) I will probably use VBPortal or PHPNuke as a portal for the forum but wanted to know if anyone wanted to work with me on this. You would have to be REALLY good with graphic sets mostly and some knowledge of Dreamweaver MX (Fireworks MX also if possible).

    Again, not requirements but...

Thanks for everyone's patience on this and I am a more knowledgable person today than I was yesterday. Your support was... I'll stop, you know how I feel. :)

It was probably just another long winded "12 gig" post from Ken.
    That's a visual I could have done without. :(

    12 Gigs?

Does this look like 12 gigs usage?

When confronted, my ISP gave me <a href="http://globalaffairs.org/bandwidth/index.cgi?action=showhost&month=Dec&year=2002&host=">this link</a> because they are telling me it's "more accurate".

If that's more accurate, we hit 32 GIGS in November!!! For a web forum? I think not.

Here's what my web panel tells me:

You nimrod, I've offered you this stuff for years now!

Actually, I do have the requisite server, but not enough bandwidth to accomodate. I might be able to cut a deal with someone, though. :)

There definitely appears to be quite the discrepancy in statistical reporting by the ISP and your web panel.

What is feeding your web panel the stats? Are they from the ISP or reporting you do from within your own software?

I am so very glad you're back!! I missed my people!!!!!

I wrote, and decided not to send each time, probably a dozen e-mails. I guess I figured Leon had enough to deal with. Hell, until I received the e-mail from him, I was afraid 'The Gin Joint' was the reason for the suspension!

Yes, I have also thought long and hard about the financial contribution we could each make. It might take just a little while, but I know I could come up with something to help cover the damages. This site is worth so much to me, and I cherish the time I spend here with each and every one of you!

I have to admit, I also questioned, and researched, how in the world we could have hit the 12 gig limit, too. Several web hosting companies were quoting figures such as a million or more text page views for this amount of bandwidth. Now one thing I don't know is if this was exclusive of all storage space or not. But 12 gigs for a forum of this size I certainly would have thought more than adequate...

Should we be more circumspect for a while in what we upload, whether for size or content? I'm quite sure that all of us, without exception, will be willing to do whatever it takes...

I think it was Steve running his Porn Server through us as a Proxy for him. Which all goes to my theory, "When in doubt, Blame Steve" ;)

Good to see it up and running again today. It was a rough night without it. This place is great...you have to know that ethics. This place is truly great :)
  17. Techie2000

    Techie2000 The crowd would sing:

    1. I still haven't gotten the e-mail...

    2. No one is allowed to die while the site is down. Period.

    3. I know UNIX and NT okay, but as far as PHP and SQL goes, I'm screwed, but if need be I could start learning. Maybe -Ken knows PHP and SQL, we could work together.

    4. There are many ways that Leon could set up to support the site including a PayPal donation thing that has become so popular. Another idea is set up an amazon comission link, and everyone can do their Christmas shopping and giving this site commission

    5. I was going to e-mail you until I realized a lack of e-mail address for you. But yeah I missed the site...

    6. So we're really that big? And the parents of these kids come and read our debates? Do I scare them with my liberalism? Are you saying that my posts are teaching other kids stuff?

Apparently part of the school's curriculum is to read the first 8 forums on the web site forum each morning and then discuss the hottest issues. The teacher mentioned that a few people already have a following (I am not included!!!! The little... ;))

Many kids, so I hear, have taken off with other sections as well like Graphics and Techie talk.

Personally, my daughter started coming here also, and reading for her current events program. She is in a magnet school(Middle School) and this forum has touched a few ears there as well.

Of course, it's not just schools, personal emails also mentioned how many are personally involved -- many with entire families with this site.
