    I too have worked for non-profits. It means the organization produces no profit. Other than that it provides jobs and income to employees just like any other employer. In my case the organization existed to develop medical technology, or as our patent attorneys described it, "building a wall of patents to surround an idea." From an employees (or officer's) viewpoint it was the same as working for any corporation.
