My 70-year-old father, a true Democrat throughout the ages, had issues with Gary Locke giving the Democratic rebuttal.

"It's not smart for them to have a Chinaman speaking for the party!" he said.

    My response:

Now true, Dad was born and bred in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, who's biggest claim to fame is a Wal-Mart. But I'm amazed at the gap between my father and I; Dad has never, ever set foot out of the country, and he and my Mom (from Texas) raised my brother and I to be racially tolerant. His sudden reversal is dischordant, in the least.

Funny, in a very sad way.

Steve, at least he was not cruel in his description. Could have been lots worse than Chinaman. The kids become the parents as we get older. I cringe when I hear my own father speak about racial minorities.

I sat around talking with some aunts and uncles one time (now that i'm in the adult crowd I get to be there for the 'adult' conversations) and was really surprised. Its one of those things where as long as they don't openly discuss it with the kids when they're still kids hopefully as time goes on we'll have a ginder gentler and more open world.

    Steve:

He may be speaking politically rather than racially. In the old days someone might have said: "It's not smart to let a Russian gove..."

Now the Chinese are the enemy. :)
