Forum software or me not knowing how to use it?

I'm used to having a "watched topics" that disappars when you access them.

This forum, it appears that all the new posts are there forever.

    Am I missing something?

If you refresh, they should show as read. If you're reading and then pressing the "back" button on the browser, it'll still show as unread.

Thank you for the tip. I believe I was selecting the first item on the list, then clicking the link and reading that topic, and then using that page to pick another item on the list. I could be wrong.

I do appreciate that there always to be somebody on the forum available to help me. :)

This is the first time in my career that I have seen this flavor of forum. I'm used to seeing either vBulletin or Simple Machines. I've never seen Xen Foro before. It does things differently enough that it has me a bit confused at times.

I did visit this topic and it's still shown in the list...

Just like this one. I have the email update, Suzy read this post. I read it, replied. Then I click "notifications" and it still shows this topic. vB and SMF don't do that. Both would show "no new posts." vB shows this as a new post even though already I replied to it.

    Notifications?

Oh.. XenForo is written by the original vBulletin coders (Mike and Kier). They bailed when Jelsoft sold out to the devil and they saw the writing on the wall. XenForo is what vBulletin COULD have become.

I'm talking about "alerts" but they should go away when I have looked at the topics and PMs... er I mean convos.

Why to they have to friggin call them conversations? In every other friggin' forum I'm in they are PMs except one dumb-ass forum I think I've made my last post where they call them DMs = Direct Messages? I mean, come on, you're shitting me. Direct Message? Private Message?

Oh that's right. If you can read MySQL they are no longer private messages. Yes I've had to snoop messages when the word up was that somebody was talking child porn on MY forum. As it turned out, they weren't discussing child porn because I can operate phpMySql. If I ever write a forum software I'll call 'em FMs. Friggin' Missives.

But no, I haven't determined what makes your alerts go away but reading the topic isn't one of them. At least SMF and vB got that one right.

Sorry, I'm pissed. I been on the Simple Machines site and they are populated by nitwits. I had to make 10 posts just to make the friggin' anti-spam go away (friggin' Google "mark all the cars" mark all the streets." IMO KILL ALL THE FRIGGIN' FORUM STAFF!!!

I want to fire up my old forum and it was based upon Simple Machines. I want to send a mass message and invite my members back. I should have never shut it down. I was making advertising $$$ in BTC. Stupid me I shut it down and now I want it back.

    OMFG BTC has exploded!

Alerts will "disappear" after 48-72 hours if I recall (something I'd have to dig under the hood to find out). This is by design. Alerts are just that. Nothing more, nothing less. Once you've moused over the Alert text to see what's there, the red number disappears. All it's doing is keeping track of what you've set alerts for.

Well it gets me confused because I go back and back again to topics I have already replied to. To my mind that is confusing. I wish I had a self checking punch list where I would know without a doubt I have answered every new but yet unread convo.

It would be better for me if the little suckers would die once I've read what they were notifying me about has gone away.

It's like carrying around a shopping list at the supermarket and not marking off the items already in your cart.

Suzy, I go to New Posts when I come on the forum. See attached. It shows I only have one unread post right now, which is correct. I will go back to New Posts after I post this.

Thanks Allene! I've used that feature sometimes too. I think what I wanna do, what I really wanna do ;) is to use that and forget notifications. Well I guess I have to use the notification to see PM notices, you know.

I've never heard of this forum software so it will take me a bit of experience to find how to best use it!

I check both the alerts, if any, and New Posts.
