And the early indicators aren't what you may think they are.

Trucking industry US economic slowdown - Business Insider

Trucking tends to show early indicators on how well the economy is doing. More loads equates to more products being transported which is good for the companies and consumer.

After a rather good year last year, initial indicators don't look good for 2015. First quarters are usually down from the rest of the year due to weather and fewer loads on the road. But April will usually show an uptick and give an idea of how the rest of the year will go.

Hopefully it's just a blip and May will show an uptick. If it doesn't, we may be in for a crummy year.

It's not just this, everything save for unemployment is showing down. PPI needs to move up, it's way down, GDP is anemic as shit and few more quarters of negative GDP will have us -- once again -- in a recession.

The most important labor statistic is workforce participation: the ratio of those who have jobs to the total of all workers employed or not. Even then it doesn't tell the full story unless you measure it in work hours because a person who works 23 hours a week is employed.

Another interesting statistic to see would be the average work week in hours. I'm sure that has declined over the last decade.
