Could we have treated Russia different?

The BIG argument for Russia being the aggressor and rise to power of Putin is how NATO kept expanding in Russia's back yard. This is the biggest hooey argument I've ever heard and someone actually took this issue and put it to bed better than I ever could.

America saw the need for a political order in the region resistant to new shocks, and NATO was the best available means. America did not humble Russia in the 1990s; on the contrary, it treated Russia with great indulgence! Overly so.

Well, they could have listened to Patton back in 1944 and took care of things then. :D

We shouldn't beat ourselves up over Russia. Putin was just looking for an excuse to do what he'd been itching to do from Day 1.
