The ground forces ordered to deploy so far are far short of the more than 250,000 U.S. troops sent to the region for the 1991 Gulf War. Defense sources told NBC News that Rumsfeld could order 70,000 more troops this week and that by mid-February 200,000 U.S. troops could surround Iraq.
The Navy has been ordered to prepare two aircraft carrier battle groups and two amphibious assault groups to be ready to head to the region sometime in January.

Reporting from the Pentagon, NBCs Tammy Kupperman said recent troop deployments include:
Some Marines at Camp Pendleton, Calif., who are part of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, which already has its headquarters in Kuwait. The exact number was not disclosed.
F15E Strike Eagles could deploy from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.
Among those units that expect to receive deployment orders as soon as they are authorized are:
F117 stealth fighters at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.
A10 Warthogs at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona.
Two squadrons of maritime prepositioning ships have also been told they will deploy to Kuwait. Each squadron carries enough equipment from tanks to water purification units to support 17,000 Marines for 30 days.
U.S. officials said the Pentagon had also alerted the 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Ky., along with troops from the 1st Armored Division and 1st Infantry Division in Germany for possible deployment."
