When you have "so-called" Tech Writers publishing this kind of bullshit, it's no small wonder the idiots in Congress are pressing on with this monstrosity of a bill.

Quote

TorrentFreak, a news site that basically supports illicit downloading, last week used a half-assed ISP-lookup service to conclude that employees of both the Recording Industry Association of America and the Department of Homeland Security had downloaded illicit copies of various copyrighted works, including episodes of the Showtime series Dexter, and songs by Jay-Z and Kanye West. The site had earlier made similar charges against several big media companies.

Really? Mr Mitchell goes on to show his true ignorance on how the Internet works with this little jewel.

Quote

Any given address could easily have been used by some kid in a Georgetown dorm room and then been assigned to the RIAA's Washington, D.C. offices.

The IP addresses in question have been assigned to the RIAA for quite some time now, and his ignorance on how ARIN works is obvious.

And then he continues with his ignorant bloviation with this gem:

Quote

The Department of Homeland Security, meanwhile, hasn't yet addressed the allegations. But it uses government computer networks -- which are usually poorly managed and full of holes -- so there's probably all kinds of horrible stuff on its employees' drives. In any case, though, the "hypocrisy" charge can't really be applied here, even if Ernesto's allegations are 100 percent accurate. DHS must enforce the law, whether the law is crazy or not.

Here's a supposed tech author who writes for Fortune, the New York Times, Slate, Wired, National Public Radio, the Chicago Tribune and other publications who should do his homework before spouting such drivel. And the really scarey thing about this is Congress will most likely cherry pick this worthless drivel as proof positive they need to do something.

The RIAA was caught red handed. DHS was caught red handed. And the RIAAs response was beyond belief. To say it wasn't them and it was a 3rd party using their IP address is so out there it's unbelievable. Especially when they sued thousands of users who claimed the same thing. I hope some young, hungry lawyer is preparing a class action lawsuit against the RIAA to get all that money back (with damages, of course).

Read Mitchell's bullshit here:

Torrent Freak's rebuttal can be found here:

http://torrentfreak....-pirates-111220

And then quietly weep because this is the kind of "expert" Congress is going to use to bolster their argument.

Plus the IP addresses in question are static.

You know. Just in case.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that. If you sub pastie.org for the IP, it works fine.

The White House issued a reasonable, reassuring statement today, authored by Victoria Espinel, Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator at Office of Management and Budget, Aneesh Chopra, U.S. Chief Technology Officer, and Howard Schmidt, Special Assistant to the President and Cybersecurity Coordinator for National Security Staff.

They made clear that the White House will not support legislation that disrupts the open standards of the Internet. Two of the points in the statement were boldfaced for emphasis:

Quote

Any effort to combat online piracy must guard against the risk of online censorship of lawful activity and must not inhibit innovation by our dynamic businesses large and small...

We must avoid creating new cybersecurity risks or disrupting the underlying architecture of the Internet.

The press is playing this as "White House will not support SOPA or PIPA."

More good news.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has promised him that he will not bring the bill to the floor unless there's "real" consensus on the bill.

I don't believe SOPA is the real target for these assholes in Congress, I believe that it's always been PIPA that's more dangerous and what they tried to push forth unnoticed while everyone was going nuts over SOPA.

These pudknockers won't be satisfied until they can control Internet content. My biggest fear will be that they sneak something through as a rider on a totally unrelated bill.

And you know they will. Which is why I am hearing of people going underground to build an alternative.

If this doesn't scare the crap out of you, nothing will.

Quote

The people in power seem a little perplexed about the guerilla tactics. ““Why can’t they just hire a lobbyist like everyone else?” a Congressional aide for the House Judiciary Committee asked the NY Times.

This is the kind of idiocy and lack of a clue that walks the halls of Congress. It's no small wonder the actual Congresscritters are clueless. Their aides are just as dumb.

What's sad is how many are totally clueless about the issue overall. As long as their little world works the way they want, they could care less about the larger picture. These are the future OWS idiots.
