I am not sure whether the kitties will be trained to use the sand when we get them so here are more questions:
1. How hard is it to potty train kittens?
2. What's the best way?
3. Any other advice would be welcome.
I have dogs down pat but new to the kitties.

Show them the box. Put them in it. Make sure they have easy access to it. Nine out of ten times you have just completely potty trained them. Except for shedding hair they are meticulously clean in all things.

Kittens are potty trained very easily. Two steps...
1) Put the kitty in the litter box.
2) Leave him alone.
That easy. They will find it and use it when they have to go. If they have an accident (very rare), put it in the litter box to put the smell in there. Relocate the litter box to the place the kitty had the accident for a short while, so the kitty will go to where they had the accident and find the kitty litter. And of course, you'll want to completely purge the floor area where they had the accident, so hopefully the smell will dissipate.

What Copz and Arc have said is all there is to it. Hell of a lot easier than house training a dog :)

I don't think my cat has ever used any spot except the catbox. It's always been covered so he used to it that way, I don't know if that makes a difference but at least I don't have to glance over and see any steamers.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it's 1/10000 of a fraction of potty training a dog.

Most definitely!!!
Also, since cat urine oder is tough to remove complete, pick us some Natures Miracle (http://www.petsuppliesplus.com/ProductGuide/Brands/DogProducts/stain_odor/naturesmiracle_stain.htm) in case there is an accident.

As mentioned in another thread, you can always toilet-train them (http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html).
