In my embarrassment file, include guy wire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_wire). In hearing it, I always thought it was "guide wire", and only actually saw it in print correctly. In defense, not a big yachter, although do listen to the radio. :blush:
This picture is of a fairly short guyed tower, but on the 1000'-2000' towers, the guy wires are tensioned such that if one is clipped and the whole thing starts to come down the entire tower will collapse within the radius of the bottom tower section.

I only learned the right way when husband was climbing those things for a living. I was just as amazed, don't feel bad. ;)
