Since my arrival to Tampa, I've found myself heavily immersed in the bike/club life again. For the most part, this is a great lifestyle, with brothers ready to help you out with some rug space, a hot meal, and support. But every now and then, the dark side rears its ugly head and you realize that life is rather fragile at times.

As with many areas across the US, the club I belong to has a treaty with the local 1%ers that allow us to fly our colors without getting hassled. For the most part, these treaties are honored, and many of us usually end up with some great friendships with those same 1%ers. It's easy to forget that the doo-doo can hit the fan at the drop of a hat.

For example, at one of the local bars here Saturday, one of the local drug dealers decided he didn't like one of the members of an outlaw club here. Seems the member was chatting up one of the gals in the bar and the dealer took exception to it. The dealer gutted the guy. One emergency surgery and 24 hours later, the individual is home, but the dealer is toast if he's ever found. And this isn't just one of those things that will blow over in a few days. He'll be running looking over his shoulder until he's found, and he will be found. Wonder if the gator will get indigestion??

The purpose of the post? There are a few new riders amongst us here at GA, and once the beginning jitters wear off and the confidence sets in, you may be tempted to check out some of the local family organizations. These organizations are fun and you develop friendships that will last forever. But you also need to realize that there's a seedy side to our lifestyle that can raise it's ugly head when you least expect it.

Don't let the 1% part of riding spoil it. You will run into it at some point in time. Usually it'll be a quick handshake and that's it. Whatever you do, just don't piss him off. :haha:

Already joined one but have yet to ride with them. Want to get a few miles under the belt since they are all crotch rocket MC. :)

Go ahead and ride with 'em. For one, you'll pick up a lot of tips and tricks that you'd otherwise have to figure out on your own. You also get a lot of experience riding in a group, which has a LOT of benefits.

We've got a large contingent of Outlaws in this area. Not a group to mess with at all. At least not this bunch. I used to know one ex-member. Two of his brothers are serving life for premeditated murder.

Think I'll pass.

I'll stick with the Yamaha Star Rider's Club that I was automatically made a member of when I bought my bike :)

You sure? What if they are doing the twisties?

You don't need to keep up with them. And I'm sure you'll have a couple hang back with you just to keep ya company. Now if they all DO haul ass off and leave you behind, you may wish to find a different group to hang with.

My husband's belonged to clubs before (last one was up here in NH), and while it's nice, it can be a pain in the ass too if they're too demanding. He quit the one he was in last and was much happier without all that crap. He's different though, and since he knows all this stuff so well, does just fine alone and mixes well with any clubs members there are around here when we're around bikers. It's nice to be a part of a club and be a club wife, but it's just as nice to not be too if you're the type that just gets along with anyone. If I ever rode a bike, I wouldn't desire to be in one to tell you the truth. I'm a loner and rebel against almost anything there is. I'd probably have problems if some club told me what I had to do all the time. ;)

Nothing wrong with being an Outrider. Clubs aren't for everyone, although it's nice to have that safety net when you're traveling if the club is widespread like ours is.

I think I'll just join the Illinois chapter of ABATE and the Patriot Guard and call it good. :)

Spent a most enjoyable weekend with one of the local 1%er clubs in the area. Looks like a very good friend will end up being a probate enventually. Some fun times ahead.
