(BTW "Internet" is a proper noun, and should be capitalized.)
Wow, Lovehound, you're really reaching, huh?

Thanks for the copy-editing. That's just what I come here for!

My mom worked for the county Social Services department and she typed in one of my sister's SSN. That sister recieved payments for public assistance because she was living in a group home. Guess what the SSN check produced? Somebody living in an apartment and collecting welfare checks based on my sister's SSN. Not my sister, of course, she didn't get that kind of assistance.

On one other matter: internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet, internet :)

Joe it just annoys me that many people do not understand that the concept of a proper noun applies to the Internet. Anybody who spends as much time on the Internet as you or I has no excuse for not understanding this.
Oh blahblabblah, lovehound. Did you forget I'm a goddamn English teacher? I "understand the concept of a proper noun" better than you understand the concept of good manners, that's for sure.

How about you take a flying fuck at a rolling donut? Or how about a FLYING FUCK AT A ROLLING DONUT?

(No worries if this has to be moved--I know I'm out of line--and even if the hound is being rude to me today, we're still friends. :))

If you're an English teacher evidently you're not a very good one, or have some teaching paradigm other than teaching by example. "Internet" is a proper noun. Are you having problems with that concept?

Oh please, just capitalize "Internet" from now on and we can move on to other battles. :)

Actually Wired magazine stopped capitalizing internet a while back stating that it's no longer a proper noun, or something similar to that.

And now Wired is the grammatical standard for the English speaking world? Oh please! :)

Actually I've been attempting a rebellion of the establishment by not capitalizing "google" but I am wrong, wrong, wrong. The "google" thing is just a game of mine, totally anti-grammatical.

Sigh.

Or, rather, sigh. I wonder how you spell the sound of a point whizzing over someone's head? Would you use a capital letter?

(Lovehound, do you really want to try to set yourself up as some kind of grammatical expert, or even an example of grammatical competence, when you say that you've been "attempting a rebellion of the establishment"? That's more than just a typo or missed finger on the shift key...that doesn't even make sense. Or when you use a term like "anti-grammatical"?)

Look, once more. There's a much more valuable concept which I would like you to understand.

It's rude to correct people's grammar in an online forum when the sense of their statements is not affected by the error. It's patronizing, it's obnoxious, it's uncivil. I'd prefer not to have to point this out to you, especially not by giving you your own medicine, but you really don't want to see the point.

So that's my last try.

Do you capitalize television, newspapers, etc.? For your reading pleasure, here is Wired's internet version: http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2004/08/64596

Zooooooooooooooooooooooooom! Like a 747 <--- the sound of something whizzing overhead.

And how many o's are appropriate? Oh wait, I used 'and' at the beginning of a sentence.

The number of o's are directly proportionate to the speed of the object in flight and the length of time it is within the normal range of human auditory reception. :blank:

OK, you are hereby directed to capitalize all of the consonants or vowels, but not both! No mixing!

No soup for you!

So okay we have an agreement. I'm rude and you don't understand the rules of grammar regarding capitalization of proper nouns. I can handle that and I don't disagree either.

Too bad you're an English teacher, evidently giving poor instruction to many students. I'd rather have a rude teacher who explains grammar correctly and leads by example. You on the other hand are compounding the problem.

Jackass is not a proper noun. It would be 'jackass.' :)

LH,

maybe joe subscribes to the eecummings theory of capitalization

maybe joe started off life as a c++ programmer

Your persistence in this sounds pathological. Were you beaten by a frustrated nun for writing god? :whip:

Jackass is actually a proper noun when used as a sobriquet for a specific person.

Not only that, it's rIdiculous! Oh, wait, that's spelling not grammar. Hmmm...must be a difference in there somewhere, lol.

God bless you Joseftu, we agree on something finally! YAY! YAY!

Oh, this is so rich!

How incredibly rude you are. Perhaps there is a better outlet for your energies...like finding a job? I do believe you say you're an EE, and southern California is a haven for those with that particular skillset. Unless you're color blind and can't tell green from blue, that is.

Or when it's used as the name of a television show or movie.

Hmm. That was a sentence fragment. Should probably avoid doing that.

Lovehound, you must have gotten out of bed on the wrong side as my grandmother used to say. ;)Yes, you're correct that Internet needs to be capitalized, but that's all you're correct about here. I actually thought this thread was a joke when I started reading it this morning.

Joe is not coming to GA as an English teacher. He doesn't need to set an example for the rest of us. We're not paying him to teach us English. Furthermore, Joe is going through a very difficult period in his life right now. If I had as much to deal with as he has, I wouldn't be able to spell Internet, let alone worry about how to capitalize the darn word. I think we should cut Joe some slack here.

When I was copyediting for a living and participating in an editing forum, one of the cardinal rules there was to refrain from correcting other participants' spelling and grammar.

Just a thought, but why isn't sky capitalized when one refers to 'the sky' in the same way as one refers to 'the internet'?

Personally I get rather irritated when I write internet and the dictionary tells me I'm wrong and wants to capitalize it.
