This is a response from reading the Cherry Eye thread.

Back in Sophomore year of HS, my dad brought home a dog. My father and another officer had gone to a house because they had received reports of animal abuse going on in the home. When they arrived on the scene they found 4 dogs that had been seriously abused. 2 of them where dead and another was so badly hurt the vets later on had to put him to sleep. The 4th one, was still young and relatively healthy.

My father opened his cruiser door and asked the dog if it wanted to go for a ride. She quickly jumped in and sat there with a 'well, what are you waiting for, let's go' look and she would not get out of the car at all. So began the story of what my family called Sasha the non-dog.

We have had dogs before, but never have we had one that acted so human. We honestly don't think she even knew she was a dog, to her mind she was a human and one smarter then the rest of us. She was a mixed breed - part boxer, part hound, and fully human.

Unlike the other dogs we have had and the ones I have been around, Sasha learned from her mistakes the first time. She would always find new ways to accomplish her goals of the first try didn't work. It was funny as hell to watch her figure things out, she was just so smart.

She loved to riding in the car. If you left the house and forgot to take her, she would sit at the front window and give you such a sad look you just had to go back and get her. When she was young she would always stick her head out the car window (I don't know why dogs do this) but she stopped the day she was smacked in the nose with a bee while going 50 mph down the road. So she started to just stick her beak out the window until one day she stepped on the button that made the window go up and got herself stuck. Since then she was satisfied with just sticking the tip of her nose out the window.

Seven years ago when my sister divorced the abusive ass that was her first husband we send Sasha to live with her so she would not be alone. It didn't' hurt that my sister had a large yard for Sasha to run around in. When my sister would go to work she would drop Sasha off for us to dog-sit, but I think Sasha was babysitting us.

A couple years ago my sister moved back into town and that is when some of the funniest stuff started to happen. Sasha figured out the route from my sisters house to ours so when she wanted to come visit and my sister was to busy. And she did, a lot. If my sister let her out to use the bathroom or if she just decided she wanted to come visit, we would hear a scratch at the door and their she was, patiently sitting and waiting for us to let her in. She was smart, always walked on the sidewalk and never crossed the road when a car was coming (other dogs should learn a lesson or two from her).

Sasha started to get really sick and there was nothing the vets could do to make her better. We just chalked it down to old age, she was close to 17 human years by now. But when we talked about it, we where surprised to discover that Sasha started getting sick at the same time my mother health started to rapidly go down hill. From other stories of close pets I have read, it seems this is not unusual. There is a bond between close pets and their family.

It got so bad that some days she could not even stand up. We decided that it was cruel to make her suffer and set a date to have her put to sleep. On September 7th of 2007 my sister and her new husband drove Sasha to the vets where she was put to sleep. In the evening of the same day, my mother passed away. Several hours later, at the end of our driveway, I found a large pure white feather just sitting there waiting to be found. So maybe, just maybe Sasha was more then a loved family member, maybe she was my mothers guardian angel.

Sasha was one hell of a dog...err, human. :)

Thank you. I hope others share their stories. :)

I wish I had a picture of Sasha on my computer, I would have posted it. Maybe my sister has one.
