I guess there was a pretty good imitation of one at our house this morning while I was at work. The stepson has been trying to work with the horse. He's been trying that horsewhisperer stuff and plying the animal with lots of carrots. Well, this morning, he was in the paddock and trying to get the horse to back up when the horse tried to stick his nose in his pocket, looking for carrots. Stepson pushed the horse back and the horse lifted his head, installing a fresh new shiner.
Not to be defeated, stepson then haltered the animal and took him out for a walk. He thought he'd try letting out the lead a bit and see if the horse would just follow him. 1200 lb. beast then decided aww fuckit, all that fresh snow and that big field was too tempting. He reared up, bucked, kicked out and was off to the races. 4 trips around the pasture at full tilt boogie and then a slide stop that ended about 5 feet from the backyard fence. I'm guessing stepson is now rethinking his career as a horse trainer. :haha:

Could've been worse (http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/667342,soldier112607.article) :)
About 6 p.m., an officer with CPD’s Mounted Unit doing crowd control at the Bears game was injured when his horse lifted its head and struck him in the face, causing him to fall, police News Affairs Sgt. Eugene Mullins said.

   Glad he didn't walk behind the horse, would have had a nice horse hoof shaped bruise (had one when I was about 8) Horses are very very smart and know when they can get away with murder. I would love to seen this in person. Sounds like you have a great horse. I used to have a horse that would rub her face on my chest. Never got clocked by a horse though.

I can just picture that one Coot!!!
Good luck breaking a horse. I hear it can be done if you have access to a small pond or something. I don't know where I heard it, maybe my dad, I don't remember, but I remember someone or seeing where they calm to being saddled and ridden faster if you do it in water.
My dad had a horse nip at him one time when my dad was a ranch hand. He didn't take the horse's shit and hauled off and punched him right in the nose. He said the horse never did that again.
I had one one time, riding with friends, get into a kicking fight with the horse a friend was on. The horse she was on had to be treated because the horse I was on broke it's skin bad in the leg. They can be very nasty. I never walk in back of a horse. Ever. Tell the kids that all the time too. Daughter's taking an equine class this spring, and I've been telling her this since we signed her up. Isn't fun when you have one that doesn't want to do what you're asking them to as well. They can sense if you're soft, very easily. Good luck to your stepson. ;)

My dad trained quarterhorses when he was in his late teens and used to do the same if a horse started doing that kind of stuff.
Told me a story once of one particular horse that used to like to rear up, but would telegraph it by pinning his ears back before he would do it. After popping the horse right between his ears a few times, the horse quit rearing up :)
