I too now get to feel the monetary fun of owning a dog that requires surgery.

We noticed something didn't look right with our 10 month old pups eye the other day, so we took her to the vet. Turns out that she has what is commonly referred to as cherry eye (http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1606&articleid=409), and it will have to be surgically repaired by a doggy ophthalmologist.

The price? A cool $600 or so.

Lovely...the dog just doubled in cost over night. ;)

I have to talk to the specialist tomorrow, but it's likely that she'll go under the knife next week.

Both of my parents' cocker spaniels have had surgery for cherry eye. Pretty common ailment for some breeds, unfortunately.

Getting an ophthalmologist to do the surgery is a good idea, as a botched surgery can cause permanent blindness.

I feel your wallet pain :)

I know you do! :)

Ya, my general vet won't even do the surgery and said to go to a specialist for the best outcome.

Yeah, the vet that did my husky's ACL surgery is an orthopedic specialist. Thankfully, the vet's office I use has one on staff :)

My beloved kitty, shortly after emergency surgery to repair a grossly distended bladder from a UTI, developed one heck of an eye infection. Turns out, he has herpes. In cats, the virus attacks any soft mucus membrane. The stress of the surgery likely caused the outbreak. Luckily, the cat variety is not transmittable to humans, and my other cat seem to have not picked it up either. But the vet care from these two back-to-back episodes topped out well over $2000.

Would I do it again? Of course, he's my baby. (And on many days, far better company than my actual children!) And that staggering vet bill is also what inspired me to quit smoking ... to pay for it all!

Finally had the meeting with the eye specialists today, and yep, the little girl needs surgery. Cost of the surgery is $534, and it cost me $115 for him to tell me that today. :)

She'll be going under the knife sometime in the next few weeks.

Should have taken Fido to a human doctor. Probably would have cost less.

Yea, yea, yea...bitch, bitch, bitch. ;)
But, you're getting her what must be done.
She has a good home.

You have every right to grumble about the costs, but, to me, the fact that you're doing it in spite of the cost betrays your grumblings. ;)
You're a good friend to her. :)

I do hope everything works out OK.

Oh, there is no choice. She's part of the family and she's only 13 months old. She has a long life ahead of her and it's our duty to make it as good as possible.

BUT...it does put on hold the new flat screen for the bedroom. ;)

We found out a few days ago that our cat has cherry eye. The animal eye clinic we took him to gave us a surgery quote for over $1400. We live in Lake Villa, Illinois. I saw that two of you live pretty close to where we are and I was wondering if you could give me the contact information for the vets that did your surgery. I think $500 sonds pretty good after hearing our price quote.
Thanks

Our "free" cat was rescued from the streets by a friend. She couldn't keep him so we got him.

Took him in for a check up to make sure he was healthy and found two broken teeth.

Our "free" cat cost us $900.

He's a great cat and wouldn't give it a second thought to drop that kind of money on him.

First of all, welcome to GA, melnrod. :)

None of my animals have ever had cherry eye, but both of my folks' cocker spaniels have.

They went through Lakes Animal Clinic up here in Antioch for both dogs. No idea how much they paid, but I know it was much much less than $1400.

Here's their office info:
Lakes Animal Clinic
222 W Il Route 173
Antioch, IL 60002
(847) 395-0100

Personally, I use Harris Pet Hospital up in Paddock Lake, but as I said, don't have any personal experience with how they deal and charge for cherry eye. Knee surgery on a dog...that is another story. :)

Welcome melnrod!

Is it just for one eye, or for both eyes? If it's for both that might not be as extreme, but for one eye, that is certainly higher than what I was quoted.

There are only three animal eye specialists in the State of Wisconsin. One is at the Vet school in Madison, one is in the Western Suburbs of Milwaukee (http://www.wiaes.com/), and the last one is up by Green Bay. I would assume that Milwaukee area would be closest for you.

To possibly save you a drive, here is the google (http://www.google.com/search?q=Veterinary+ophthalmologists+in+illinois&btnG=Search&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=l5H) search results for vet eye specialists in Illinois. Make sure you see a specialist to fix Cherry Eye, not a general practice vet.

The quote is only for one eye. Thanks for the prompt responses to my question, I will try getting some more quotes from different hospitals. I really didn't know where to start. We moved here from Germany a few months ago and everything is still pretty new for me here. I really miss my vet right now.

I feel the same way about our pets. You should have seen us when we came over here from
Germany. We had two cats, two bunnies and a lot of luggage with us. We got some pretty strange looks at the airport and on the plane because I bought an extra seat for the cats. We will get the surgery for sure, I just don't want to pay more than we have to.

My wife dragged two of our cats (now gone :( ) through Leonardo Di Vinci Airport on Thanksgiving Day, 1987 to bring them back to the States.

I couldn't help because I was at sea at the time.

We didn't think twice about bringing them back with us. They were/are family.
