I was down at the ranch supply store a bit ago and ran across a guy from work who has a small ranch about 30 miles from here. He has a bunch of tack for sale and I'll be heading down to have a look at it this afternoon. He also has a 3 year old registered appaloosa mare for sale...cheap. I guess I'll be giving her a pretty close look as well. Jeebus, this critter keepin' could easily turn into a full time job all on its own.

I'm still looking for a grass hay source. I think I've found one, at least I hope I have. 2 ton for $300. That's about a 6-9 month supply for one horse. Hopefully, the alfalfa content is less than 20%. If so, I can feed it to the alpaca as well.

Kind of like Lay's potato chips. You can't have just one ;)

Holy schmoley. I didn't realize how much it cost for feed.
How's the Mrs doing with all this by the way? Is she out there lending a hand, kickin' some butt and yelling out sweet nicknames? :) (to the animals, not you, lol)

The radiation treatments are wearing her pretty thin, along with the neuropathy that's a byproduct of the chemo. She was out there yesterday and managed to feed him some carrots, look around a bit and complain about the smell. ;)

Funny, you're starting to talk like my otherwise proper English buddy when he hangs around rednecks too long, "I need 50 foot of rope." (Instead of "feet.") ;)

My 20 pound dog takes about 9 out of 22 oz. of a $1 can of dog food (per day), about $150 per year. Coot's horse would take about $480 per year. That's a maybe 1,200 pound horse vs. a 20 pound dog, and only 3x more!

Pound per pound Coot is better off with a horse! That's a damned good deal! I can't even ride my li'l doggie! (Well I could but he wouldn't be able to go anywhere.)

LH is right, I just did the math on how much I pay for dog food in a year for my two dogs. I'm at $425 a year. Mainly because my Akita is a bottomless pit lol.

Coot is getting one hell of deal :)

Yeah, and he gets to ride his horse too! :) I can only imagine riding my 20 pound li'l doggie! ;)

Coot, maybe you should get chickens. You can't ride 'em, but you can eat 'em, something we can't do with horses or doggies, well, at least we don't do that in America. :)

Hey Violet, how much did your chickens cost to feed? Let's know the cost of chicken feed! :)

This has been an extremely bad hay year in the Southeast, so don't wait too long to buy, prices will only go up as those around here become more and more desparate.

complain about the smell. She's getting stronger, lol. ;)

Awww.. she's in pain to boot. That sucks. How much longer with the radiation? That should be ending soon, no? Give her a hug for us!

We only had to buy it once and it was like 6 bucks or so. We got rid of them. A neighbor took them. We might do them again next spring. They kept getting out, where we had their coop, and my husband penned them in. It really wasn't worth it for us to run a line out there for a bulb, as well. It was risky when they got out, if the kids were riding their 4 wheelers. Didn't want them to have an accident trying to avoid them.

OMG Coot! I want a horse!! Best of luck with your animals and congrats again on the ones you have so far. A horse would be sooo cool! :)
