View Full Version : Ruptured ACL...

My husky came in from the yard Friday evening limping badly. Thought maybe she had stepped on something, but I didn't see any damage to her paw. Felt along her leg and she whined when I got to her right rear knee. "Oh shit" pretty much summed up my thoughts at that point.
Just got home with her from the vet's office, and what I feared is what's wrong with her. She managed to rupture her ACL in that knee. :(
Only thing I can think of is that she was chasing a squirrel or something and screwed her knee up.
So, I take her back next Monday night to be prepped for surgery, which will be Tuesday. The surgery is going to cost me $1200 or so that I don't friggin' have. :banghead:
Lovely start to the holiday season :yougottabekidding:

Poor doggy! I hope she gets better and it turns out not to be a damper on the holidays!
Sorry, Mike. Wrong time of the year to have something this unfortunate to deal with. :(

I'm sorry to hear that Mike. Our friends bird hunting dog just had the same surgery 2 weeks ago. He's already back to his normal self, so rest easy that the surgery should be a great success!

Right before the playoffs, too! Seriously, sorry to hear about this. Hope your pooch makes a full recovery and the long-term impact on your wallet is minimal.

Thanks all. I just got done talking to my boss. His two golden retrievers have both had this surgery, one of them on both knees. He filled me in on what to expect after the surgery. He also mentioned that the $1000 is cheap compared to what he paid.

Here's hoping for an unexpensive surgery, and a speedy recovery. At least the problem is fixable.
Awww..the poor cutie! And for you too! I struggle enough as it is and worry too much about the extra expenses that could come up for us much less the dogs. But it always seems to work out.

I called American Express a bit ago to talk with them about putting the surgery on my card they were 1.) very helpful and will allow me to pay off the surgery cost in installments and 2.) were quite sympathetic, which was pleasantly surprising.
That's a relief.

Spoke with the vet a few hours ago. Frost came through her surgery with flying colors. ACL has been repaired and there was no damage to the meniscus either, which the vet was concerned about.
Needless to say, I'm relieved. :)
Should be able to bring her home tomorrow evening. Which will be nice, since my Akita, Ronin, has never been without her nearby, and he is NOT liking it a bit. 120 pound dog has turned into a big whiny baby lol.

Glad she came through just fine. I imagine you are getting some puppy eyes from the other one, since he blames you for this

Good news, indeed! :)
A tasty treat, a new toy, all is forgiven; such is the wonder of dogs, eh?

I wouldn't doubt it. He kept whining last night until I came out and slept on the couch where he could see me.
He's pretty worn out right now, as am I. Just got done playing tug o' war with him for about 20 minutes. I think he's finally figured out just how strong he is lol.

Just got home with her. Have to take her back in 3 days for a checkup and again in 10 days to have the stitches removed. Until then, she is crate-bound, except to go out on her leash to do her business. Doctor's orders.
Will find out the rehab regimen at the 10 day visit.
Here she is, resting and drugged up in her crate, which I've moved to the living room for now, so I can keep an eye on her.
Was a little less expensive than I was told. Was still $1009 though. Doesn't matter. As long as she heals up and is good to go afterwards.

Just got home from taking Frost in for a checkup and to get the stitches out of her leg. Her knee is in great shape and I can start taking her for short walks, as long as there isn't any ice on the pavement. The vet and I both are worried about her slipping.
If nothing else, I can at least let her wander around the house occasionally. Next checkup is in a month, but so far, so good :)
Aww, how wonderful! She must be thrilled. :)

Pal, all I can say is thank goodness for 'masters' such as yourself.
Frost is enjoying the best life she can, thanks to you.
Glad to hear everything's going well.
