Lots of changes scheduled for this place in the next couple of weeks. We'll likely have some alpaca populating our barn sometime this coming week. I've been getting things ready out there for this. Pulled in power, ran conduit and wire, installed lighting, plumbed in water. Still some things to do to finish getting it ready, but the alpaca are on the way.

Then this morning, a friend of ours from Cali who dabbles in thoroughbred race horses gave us a thoroughbred. A 4 year old stallion by the name of Roaring Waters. It'll take a week or two to get the logistics of moving him up here worked out and get him here, but he's definitely on the way. He's really not much of a racehorse, as he's friendly and lazy. He has the lineage, he would just rather be a pet than an athlete. All of which means even more work to do out in the barn.

As Carol starts recuperating, this should give her some good therapy, hanging out with the animals.

OMG, how cool is that?? I can now tell people, "yeah, I know someone who has alpaca, what's the big deal?" I always saw them on the commercials and wondered what it would be like to have a couple.
And a horse too! That place of yours be growing! Fresh air and farm work...great for the body and soul. Carol will be fit as a fiddle in no time!

Sounds like you will be busy! Get that race horse a friend, and you'll be all set-up (sell the lazy ones, keep and race the fast ones!).

Oh, they'll get sheared every spring. We won't be doing any spinning here, but if you're of a mind to do some, I think we can send you some fleece. ;)

Hmmm...thinking...I'm going to need a new saddle pad. Sheep's wool or alpaca? :haha:

Sounds really great, Coot! :)

Just one thing, if I may; How about some pictures, as soon as you get your new tenents in the barn?
That way we all will have something to compare; to the pictures you send us a few months later of the same animals that have gained 100lbs each due to being spoiled! ;)

Roaring Waters will be here in 10 days. Which, I believe, is the day I leave town on business for a week. :/ I know some horse people here locally, actually I know a lot of horse people here locally, I'll have someone come by while I'm gone and make sure he's getting settled in and set up the stall cleaning regimen, etc.

The reason for the 10 day wait is they just cut him today and are waiting for his ballsack to heal up a bit before transporting him.

Oy, that might be a little too much information! ;)

Seriously, sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. But do post some pictures--otherwise this is how I'm going to imagine you.

Yak milking for fun and profit!

We should have 4 alpaca out there Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest. I'll be knocking out the last of welded wire on the back fence and then setting up the ranch panels for their outdoor pen. I should be able to get those done tomorrow after work. If so, then I'll bring in the alpaca on Tuesday, if not, it'll be Wednesday.

Then I just have to get the horse stall and paddock set up for his arrival the following week. We're gonna be mini ranching and get Mama some much needed animal therapy.

Alpacas are so awesome ... they have the sweetest little faces! And they give the best wool for yarn! Well, them and Merino sheep ... and Quiviut.

The black one is Noah, the dark brown one is Llano, The white one is Chaos and the light brown one is Joe. ;)

We've got a toenail clipping session planned for tomorrow on them, so the spitting should commence right after we start. :haha:

They are sooooo cute. How many girls and boys?

They are all boys, 2 more than the others. The dark brown and the light brown have not been altered yet, the tan and the white have been cut. I'm not used to their names yet. The lighter brown guy needs to be cut, but we're waiting on his fiber crimp confirmatiohn before doing that. His physical confirmation doesn't meet breeding standards, but he may grow out of that and be valuable. The dark brown boy is only about 10 months old and we're waiting for him to develop before that can be determined.

Interestingly enough, the light brown guy and the white guy are Surreys. When their coat grows out, they'll look like Rasta alpaca. They naturally grow long dreadlocks and once again, they're neutered, as they really don't have the physical characteristics that one would want in a herd. Llano and Noah are huacaya youngsters and are waiting to have their confirmation proved.

Alpaca are odd creatures. If there's only one, it will die. Two is the absolute minimum you should keep, as one always has to be on watch whilst the others sleep and only having two is rough on them.

Girls may be coming, but we need to figure out who we're going to breed them to and why. A quality and proven female of the right line is pricey, so we'll take a wait and see with this. So far, Carol is content to sit in the bedroom and look at them. Apparently, telling her that she needs to get her ass up and go feed them isn't working. Tomorrow night, the only way they get fed is if she gets up and does it. ;)

Ah thank you. That is very interesting. Never knew they were such herd animals.

Hummmm....
Looks like they're saying., "So this is our new home, eh? I don't know if I like it, but let's see what the 'feed-master' is like before we rebel".

Good luck with your new herd. :)

Is she still feeling like shit or depressed?

Didn't see this until now, Coot. I live next door to an alpaca farm. They're really nice animals. I love the name of your new horse. Glad to see things going so well for you and your wife.

It took a little longer, but Roaring Waters arrived this afternoon. He's about what I expected from a thoroughbred...high strung and a tad skittish. He's shy about going into the barn right now, although I expect that'll change as that's where the water and the food is. ;)

I'll give him a day or two to get used to his new digs and then start working with him. He should gentle out just fine. He already comes over to greet you when you stand outside his pen. He gets a little skittish when you go in there with him, but that should be over with in a day or two.

He's already getting to know the 'pacas and I don't anticipate any problems between them. He heard one of the goats a neighbor keeps off in the distance and his ears perked right up. Apparently, he was best buds with a pet goat they kept at his last stable.

Wow, what a little beauty.

He's not so little when he's standing on your :friggin: foot! He absolutely wouldn't go in the barn on his own, even though he could smell the food. I went out and put a halter on him and led him in with a couple of carrots. I had to actually pull him up to the hay manger and the chow bin. As I got him up there, he stood on my foot. Haven't had that happen in years and it does smart!
