Heh, you don't know how right you are, Domh. I first heard of "defenestration" replacing the guillotine in France as a method of execution, when a handcuffed suspect was tossed out of the sixth-floor "fenêtre" of the police headquarters.
[I know this is the English forum, but just a note of interest - when French words have that funny "hat" - circumflex accent on a vowel, most often it's because of a rule that puts that accent there, when the word in the original Latin had a cosonnant such as "s" following that vowel. Just interesting trivia.]
