We need new ones, it seems. (http://economist.com/opinion/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9621676)
I enjoy reading articles and books about the English language. Look up William Zinnser's On Writing, (http://www.amazon.com/Writing-Learn-William-K-Zinsser/dp/0062720406) which I got during my first year in law school, or Richard Lederer's works, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Lederer) especially his essay on short words.

I wish all cliches and metaphors would die a painful death.

Didn't you just make a cliche? ;)

More of a simile (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=simile)I think.

I'm just looking at this forum area for the first time in many months, and wondering, didn't anybody read the thread title? :)
hint: possessive vs. plural problem

I was amused because evidently nobody had noticed before.
I haven't seen this English forum get much activity, but it's interesting that there are often a few people viewing this forum. I suspect the topics have a fair amount of interest to foreign guests, perhaps trying to puzzle out what is admittedly a difficult language to master, or at least so I've heard that it's difficult.

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts this is a valid point. After all it is not unusual to see a doughnut cost more than a dollar these days. That and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee.... no wait make it $5.25 for a double tall skinny yadda yadda yadda..... Do I look like I just fell off the turnip truck?
Yeah maybe they have a point. A modern cliche would not last long though given the change of pace, by the time it was established and in wide use it would be just as out of date. They are just filler anyway, as long as the other party knows what you are saying does it really matter that cliche has no bearing on modern life?
