Besides a good dictionary and thesaurus...

These are some of my favorites:

Strunk and White: The Elements of Style (http://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-Fourth-William-Strunk/dp/020530902X)
Truss: Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation (http://www.amazon.com/Eats-Shoots-Leaves-Tolerance-Punctuation/dp/1592400876)
Anson: The Longman Handbook for Writers and Readers (http://www.amazon.com/Longman-Handbook-Writers-Readers-4th/dp/0321233034)

I'll add more later..time for dinner

Great stuff. I tried Truss but I thought O'Connor's "Woe is I" was better. But that's just personal choice. :)

There is also the AP Stylebook (http://www.amazon.com/Stylebook-Briefing-Media-Associated-Press/dp/0465004881/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-0272090-4154369?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186405633&sr=1-2), which is the bible for Communication and PR majors.

You can rant on me all you'd like, I don't have a communication or PR degree, nor do I play one on TV. ;)

Just passing along what is used as the rule book at many Universities around the country for certain degrees.

Don't doubt it's used. My rant was on their teachings.

Ah. I remember when my wife was getting her PR degree there were two books that every student in her major carried. The AP Stylebook and The Element of Style.

In fact, I think both were required purchases.
