View Full Version : Using an abbreviated word at the end of a sentence

I get stumped on this one a lot lately. For instance....

I get angry when chickens attack me, because of the bruises, shortness of breath, etc..

I leave off that period at the end right? Because the period used in the abbreviation takes care of it? Or use two periods because one is used to shorten a word, the other to end a sentence?

I have a feeling I know there's only supposed to be one period, but it's been so long since I've learned this stuff in school, I wind up sitting there second guessing myself.

That's my understanding. But something tells me that's not official. :)

The best alternative is to find another construction that is not awkward. That's what my HS English teacher would have told me in Advanced Comp.

(Note the quandary posed with my sentence above, which was intentional.)

"That's what my HS English teacher would have told me in Advanced Composition." <-- better

Just one period does the job. You don't need an extra one to end the sentence. The period on the abbreviation is sufficient.

A double duty period, good to know, thanks! :)
Should you bold it or anything, so folks know it's working overtime?

Just slip it a little extra in its next pay packet.

hehehe I'm totally loving this English Language forum. I was telling "the beau" about it earlier. He knows how happy I am. *giddy

My English Composition teacher taught me the same thing, LH. Reconstruct if it seems awkward.
But that doesn't mean it is incorrect.
