Looks like this country went from Democrat to Republicans in the last decade or so.

Not really, but the difference is staggering. Even through Reagan years there was a lot of purple. There was even a website that showed that the LAST elections were purple. Just stating that it's not.
What the hell was going on in 1968 that made a lot of the south green? What am I forgetting?

I was going to ask that. Good question.
Oh, shit. I'm in trouble if you don't know the answer, lol. I know we were aflux at the time...but I don't remember an alternative party being anything big. But then again, we were in the north and knew to ignore the south.

Just stating that it's not.I don't recall that, but there are a lot of fun ways to play with graphs and statistics. Though I do want to point out, I initially believed that you meant to post this in the Gin Joint until I clicked on the thread...;)

I was born in 1968 and came here in '78. I wouldn't really know especially if it's a movement that wasn't publicized much? Dunno, I am drawing blanks here. The only thing I can guess is that so many were fed up with the Vietnam War that there was a grass root movement? Perhaps not unlike today but it's much bigger today than just a few states?

Politically, 1968 was the year of George Wallace. Alabama governor and outspoken segregationist campaigning for president. That was also the year Martin Luther King was shot.

I believe that was the American Independent Party. It was founded by George Wallace in 1968, but didn't make it.
It's now headquartered in California as a splinter group of the Constitution Party.
Ahhh yes. Good ole George Wallace. I hadn't realized they started their own party. While I wasn't born in 1968 (Leon's such a BABY!), I was young and not paying attention to political parties. Just knew about the headlines.
When did this whole 'independent' thing start... or were the independents always there? (as in democrat vs republican vs independent)

I was 10 in 1968, but had an excellent history/social studies/civics teacher who got us involved in the 1968 elections. We studied the entire process, issues, and candidates and then had a mock election. I've been hooked on politics ever since.
Coincidentally, when my wife and I were back in Wisconsin in 2003 I ran into him. We were having dinner with the rest of my family at a place called "Smokey Bones". We were sitting in the booth directly across from him. I hadn't seen him for about 35 years.
