The resignation/removal of the head mufti in Australia is significant and welcome news for many down here. Including your's truly. Sheik Alhilaly was always a controversial character and for many, should never have been allowed in the country due to his radical, uncompromising approach to the interpretation of Islam and his attitude to other cultures and religions. He is best known for his outrageous comments such as,
Sheik Alhilali sparked outrage by describing scantily clad women as "uncovered meat" and joking about notorious gang rapes by young Muslim men.
He also said Muslims had more right to be in Australia than people brought to the country in chains as convicts.
See what I mean. The good news is not only that he has lost his role as head mufti, but that rather than resigning, was supposedly voted out by his peers. His replacement has been described as a moderate, but after Alhilaly most would qualify as moderate. Alhilalhy's move falls under the category of good riddance to bad rubbish. A shit stirrer like him should never have been allowed to get into Australia legally. I might be Liberal in many ways but when it comes to letting jerks like him into the country I qualify as a fascist! He made the front pages of the local papers far too often and it will be a relief to hear very little of him from now on with his postion as a local mufti only, greatly reduced in status and influence. He has done the local muslims a good deal of harm in their relations the broader community which should improve with his departure.
