I'm not usually a fan of the Times Online, but this article (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/gerard_baker/article1901352.ece) nails it perfectly. For me at least. :)

Wow. This is the level of political acumen and analysis required to become a writer for the newspaper of record of the United States? No wonder they and their ilk are going out of business. As to the meat of the matter. He misses some real issues standing in the way of the Democrats' lust for the Oval Office (and perhaps a re-election of their current majority.)
As slowing economy. Their tax hikes are only ignored during boom times.
Rising interest rates. Uninformed and ignorant voters gauge business cycles by the DJIA.
Unemployment with nowhere to go but up. Dems aren't known for business-friendly legislation.
The illegal alien amnesty agenda. This will hurt Dems more than the weak-willed Republicans, just because there are more Dems.
