SEATTLE, Dec. 19 — The U.S. Coast Guard is embarking on a transformation of leviathan proportions, moving to reshape itself as a modern military force capable of defending the country’s shores from terrorists. Even those who wonder if the agency’s new emphasis on homeland security will affect its performance of safety and regulatory duties acknowledge that the makeover is long overdue. So does this mean the USCG won't be part of the DOT anymore? :)

Bah. This is the only military branch I wanted to get in to (and was very very close after 9.11 as many of you recall). Not sure if this is what I would want to be doing since my thang was S&R.

They are improving S&R with more boats and ships in the water an the new Rescue 21 Communications System for pinpointing boaters or other calls for help. Less problems for people needing help, seems good to me.

If your thing is S&R, you might want to look into the Civilian Air Patrol. I believe they are under the US Air Force.

Gentleman, that would be "SAR"--Search and Rescue. As opposed to CSAR--Combat Search and Rescue.
I can only presume the USCG's core mission will remain the same, albeit with different tools to choose from in order to encompass mission creep.

Steve, go teach your grandmother to suck eggs. I was a CAP member of a SAR Team when I was 16yrs old, part of my wanting that AF Scholarship. I merely used the term that I was responding to so as not to confuse.
:kissmy: ;)

Don't even tempt me to post my long and involved he-man story of flying an attack helicopter on a CSAR mission with no preflight coordination, only an RDF slice. Lights out, no commo, overwater.
Beat that, Cappie.

Civilian runs out and tells military he-men to just 'EVERYONE GET ALONG'.
*then runs for nearest hardened shelter*

Redleggers...the only requirement one has to be a gun cocker is a strong back and the ability to point a gun in one certain direction on a given day. ;)

Tee-hee.
Hey, Signal Corps Boy...what does ZEE mean? I came across this somewhere and can't recall it exactly...is it like a break from standard commo procedurals, or something?

Don't remember I was ever taught that. I never served as the RATT operator. Worked mostly at Corps level tacitcal units. Actually was asst course chief for Radio Relay course in 70. These rigs were usually deuce and a half mounted with antennas of 50-100 foot. Of course the Cav, my unit in Nam, was designed to use VRC-46 series for radio relay but ended up using the big stuff like regular divisions.
