Some years back, my family and I went to the pound for a pound puppy. The litter came advertised as a "chiuaua" (I know, bad spelling) mix, so we picked the cutest of the bunch. Thinking that he was going to be very small, we named him "Killer" so we could put that on a bowl as big as he was to scare away any burglers. Well, he grew into what looked to be a boxer/terrier breed, as he stood about 20" to his shoulder when fully grown.
Well, this past week I have been moving my family into an apartment in my complex so we can be close together (it's complicated). Our Peiakinise (another spelling) was snuck in under the lease with a wink and a nod from my landlord, but I knew Killer was too big. We brought the dogs into the apartment yesterday, and today the landlord made a comment about "the horse in my apartment." Killer gave himself away, and we were left with little choice.
Now, Killer has been living with hip displaisa for a couple of years now, and it was especially bad in the winter time. So it was with a little consolidation that we took him to the vet tonight to be put down. My son came with me and we both cried the whole time. Killer passed quietly onto his reward right at 7:00pm tonight.
I know I'll get to see him again, when we have both shed this mortal coil, but until that time, I'm going to miss this one. Always friendly and love-starved, never a mean bone or bark in his body. I just hope one day I'll live up to be the human he thought I was.
It's never easy to lose a faithful friend.
