The fastest-growing political party in America today is no party ... People are registering as Independents because they're fed up with -- they don't see them in the two major parties and they're sick of the fury, the partisanship and instability. And I think if the two major parties don't hear this going into '08, there is a real chance of an Independent third-party candidacy. And watch out, if that happens.

The only think Lieberman misses is that not enough are fed up. Still a good observation though.

Watch out is right. A third party candidate was the reason George Herbert Walker Bush the incumbent president was defeated and the nation ended up with William Jefferson Clinton as its new president. No third party candidate and Bush would have been reelected.

I don't think that is anything new. I registered independent years and years ago so I wouldn't have to be associated with any particular party. Unfortunately I ended up registering Republican because I wouldn't have had a shot at a county job if I hadn't. Didn't get the job and didn't bother to change it back again...what for?

Perhaps Lieberman himself is angling for a third party candidacy. After all, it worked to keep him in the Senate.

I registered as an independent because nobody could tell me what the party charters said and stood for. Everybody says something like 'you just know' what they want/are/etc. What BS! The biggests loudmouths in the neighborhood speak on behalf of the entire population? Just like the battle between science and theology (where smugly presented facts lose out to speculative charisma), the major parties attitudes are like rude dance club bouncers compared to to the recruiter-type tactics of organizations such as the Nature Conservancy.
