Rather interesting article (http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21169980-5007132,00.html). I'm sure, with the millions of people that have visited Australia, this article means little, but it is interesting none the less.
AUSTRALIA was a deadly destination for 2433 overseas visitors in the past seven years - including at least 25 children.

Statistics have revealed the hidden toll Australia's harsh environment takes on tourists with drowning the third most common cause of death.

Lifesavers said many tourists failed to see rips and wildlife experts said even a koala could "carve up" an inquisitive foreigner who invaded its space.

A regular means of committing losing your life down here is to take a trip to the outback without getting details of how to conduct your trip before you go. Running out of water, breaking down in 50c heat, miles from any help and so on, all takes it's toll. Lack of ocean swimming experience, as the article points out, is a regular life taker too.

Lots of creepy crawlies and stinging things here too. Steve Irwin who made his living from being close to them found out the hard way, as you know.

And these too,

A group of children, ready for their early morning swim class in Darwin, got a nasty fright when a 1.6 metre crocodile got there first.

"They turned the lights on, noticed a dark shape in the corner which scuttled over the lawn and into the water," said a staffer at Nightcliff Pool, Louise Salathiel.

Ignorance breeds mortality, I believe. I can certainly see some stupid gung ho people going out in the wild and dehydrating, or doing something stupid with the wild life--like not avoiding it.
