Story Here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070109/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/venezuela_chavez)

Now that Chavez has been sworn into another term (lasting until 2013), he wants to "nationalize" the telecommunication and power industries. The oil industry has already been somewhat nationalized, and he'll likely continue that further as well.

No wonder Castro is his good friend. After all, Chavez is simply following in his footsteps and following the same play book. One has to wonder though if he'll eventually suffer the same fate?

Nationalize? Big deal, no one knows what that means and those that do don't care because most countries do that anyway.

No, what you are seeing is SOCIALISM at its finest. Something the assholes at Berkeley lawns who want it have no idea what it is. How fast would they be singing their tune if this was done here in the US.

"We are in an existential moment of Venezuelan life. We're heading toward socialism, and nothing and no one can prevent it."--Chavez (http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D8MHCH7G0.htm)

Socializing your industry means one thing, privatization, you know owning your own business and/or industry, is out the door.

"All of that which was privatized, let it be nationalized," Chavez said, referring to "all of those sectors in an area so important and strategic for all of us as is electricity."

"The nation should recover its ownership of strategic sectors," he said.

I dare any Socialists of this forum tell me how this is good for the people.

It will be interesting to see the progress or regress they make over the next few years in terms of service, new technology, etc. If (when?) things begin to lag, the spin and blame should be fun to watch, although it's unfortunate the Venezuelan people will likely lose out.

Without a doubt. Socialism doesn't breed anything but contempt for the idiot who installed it.

Like almost all tinpot countries with a windfall, Venezuela succeeded in building a huge poverty class. This is the power base upon which Chavez has built his administration. He throws a few cheap shreds to the poor and they scream in ecstasy at the mere sight of him. When his idiotic economic policies bring the Venezuelan economy crashing down and make those poor even poorer, they will be unmerciful. The middle and upper class already hate him; he will be torn apart. He thinks he has the charisma of a Castro, Hitler, or Peron, but in fact he is just another sweaty, moronic laughable banana-republic bleater.

Oh ya, it's Socialism plain and simple. Using the word "nationalize" doesn't change that fact one bit, yet Chavez loves to use it like it's some sort of inclusive thing for his people.

Riiiiigh.
