That youngest being my beloved dachshund, Slinky. We have a weird one going on, can't seem to grasp the problem.

One week ago, Slinky had impacted anal glands. This is her third instance of this despite the fact that I express her anal glands weekly. She had to have one gland lanced to be drained, but the next day, she was full of life and energy.

Now, she is acting weird again. Lying on the couch, Slinky started shaking and yelped as if in severe pain. She refused to jump on the couch or a chair, then even the stairs. What makes this so strange is that she wants to spend all of her time outside. She romps through the snow and literally refuses to come back inside. She has never been like this. Once she comes back in, she goes back to be lethargic.

Tonight, I put her on my bed and she hasn't moved for HOURS. I pet her and she is shivering ever so slightly, moaning a bit too.

So, we are headed for the vet tomorrow and hopefully she will be able to figure it out. I'm at a total loss and I hate it when my baby is in pain and I don't know why!!!!!!!!!

I hope the vet can get to the bottom of it quickly.

Only things I can think of are

1.) your pooches poop isn't solid enough to drain the glands as your dog does it business (fixable by diet change, I think).

2.) Perhaps the gland that got lanced has developed an infection. That would cause the lethargic behavior and the pain.

Slinky spent the night in the doggy hospital. It is pancreitis. The only way to get rid of it is to completely shut down the digestive system. So, no food or water. They give her an IV for fluid.

Talking with the vet this AM, Slinky is doing great. We should have her back this afternoon.

Slinky is truly a dachshund. Dachshunds are known for being spiteful and she is living up to that. Previously, I owned a dachshund named Gabby. She lived 18 years. She hated to be left at home. Normally, she was okay when left, but at times, it really made her mad. In those cases, we could come home to find every trashcan in the house overturned, and, if we had forgotten to shut the bathroom door, she would go in, get the end of the toilet paper in her mouth, and pull it through the house. She would then pee on the toilet paper in as many places as possible. She wouldn't piddle on the floor, but on the toilet paper.

Slinky isn't quite that spiteful, but she was hilarious yesterday. When my daughter and I picked her up she was excited! Jumping up and down and licking us. By the time we got to the car, she was beginning to be angry, realizing we were the reason she had to spend the night at the hospital. In the car, she started to 'talk' to us. Not barking, whiney, voice like sounds out of her mouth. When she does that, you know she is mad.

When we got home, she jumped out of the car, went in the house, completely ignored everyone at home, went inside, jumped up on the couch where her blanket is, crawled under and went to sleep. Completely ignored everyone that went over and petted her and told her how wonderful she was. She just curled into a tight ball and stayed there.

She should be fine this morning, she can never stay angry very long, too loving of a dog. But it was truly funny last night, not a wag, not a lick after she got home.

Good for her, she SHOULD be pissed!
After all, you sent her to stay overnight at that :friggin: evil place!
(She has no concept that you did it for her own good. ;) )
I know you know that.
And I know that you'll assure her that she's a good girl, and things will soon be back to normal.

I'm glad the vet figured out what was wrong and what to do.

Oh yeah, I understand her anger and we spent the entire night reassuring her about how wonderful she and how much we love her. What is a bit humorous is I know how well they treat her, and that she was the only overnighter. Whenever they have an overnighter, a tech stays the night. Slinky refused to sleep and the tech spent most of the night holding and petting her. She HATES cages and whined non-stop when the tech put her in there. So, she was basically spoiled rotten. Still, I'm sure Slinky associates the vet with shots and pain so it is understandable.

She is fine this AM, pretty much back to normal. She was a bit skittish taking a ride in the car this morning, I'm sure worried we were taking her back, but other than that, doing well.

At home she is on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. The antibiotics liquid, the other a pill. She is so good at picking pills out of food that I don't even try hiding it anymore. I just shove it down her throat then give her a treat.

Doc feels that she should be fine in a week or so. Let's hope we can keep this from happening again!

Damn, she's relapsing. Talked with the Vet. We are going to try and take care of her at home, meaning no food of ANY kind and only a small amount of water, 1/8th cup morning, noon and night for Sat. Sunday will still be no food but a continuous supply of water. Monday, a small amount of food, 1/4 cup of wet food specifically made for dogs with her condition, in the morning. All the water she can drink. Tuesday they will do a blood test and we'll see if she is okay. This sucks.

Awww. The poor thing! I hate it when the dogs are sick. My Golden has seizures every couple of months. It's terrible. I've learned to not get too upset now...just sit with him and talk to him, stroke him. It's so difficult when a pet or kid are sick. :(
