....that entered Sydney Harbour in 1942 after evading nets across Sydney Heads, the entrance to the harbour, has been found off Sydney's nothern beaches.

The missing two-man submarine M24 was one of a trio that slipped in darkness past protective nets stretched across the harbour entrance on May 31, 1942, with a plan to attack shipping, including the American battle cruiser USS Chicago.

This, and the bombing of Darwin, were the two events of WWII where the Japanese attacked Australian territory.

Amazing that it has stayed hidden for so long. I love stuff like this. It is why when I was in High School I wanted to go into undersea archeology.

Pretty deep water where it was found helped keep it undiscovered although, only three kilometres off the coast.

These "midget" subs aren't so tiny. Not as much so as I'd imagined when I first heard of them years ago. Big enough to hold two persons.

I've seen pictures of these before. The two protrusions in the front are torpedoes, right?

It's been so long since I visited that museum, if I hadn't googled the web site I might have described the italian sub as being the 'Type A' in question. But the two bumps sure do look like torpedoes sticking out.
