I once had 5 points knocked off a test for using "thru" instead of "through".
That won't be happening in New Zealand (http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/11/11/nz.text.ap/index.html).
I'll admit, it bothers me when standards are lowered like this. I think children who leave school having been taught like this will be rudely surprised when they go after real jobs in business settings.
Could it be that the English language is returning to the state in which it existed before the 19th Century (give or take), when standardized spelling was nonexistent and grammar was catch-as-catch-can?
