Wow (http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/11/07/061107055949.t193etet.html)! I had no idea it was so bad in Australia!

The world's driest inhabited continent was in the grip of the worst drought in 1,000 years, a river management expert told Australia's political leaders.

Prime Minister John Howard and three state premiers were presented with the assessment by an expert on the country's most significant river system at a crisis drought summit in Canberra.

The drought has already been described variously as the worst in living memory, the worst in a century and the worst since white settlement more than two centuries ago, and Howard said he could not verify the latest claim.

"You say worst drought in a thousand years, I don't think anybody really knows that," he said, adding that he was not a scientist. "It's a very bad drought."

Good luck down there!

Check out this photo (http://www.msnbc.com/modules/interactive.aspx?type=ss&launch=15532020,3842331&pg=5) from MSNBC; reminds me of the U.S. dustbowl from the 30s.

Thanks Plunge. Yes, that 1000 year remark was off the cuff and just a cute remark and nothing more.

The farmers are really suffering right now. Our major river system, The Murray, Darling, is in big trouble with big water use crops such as cotton and ricxe taking too much. Why we wanted to try cotton in this country is beyond me. The cities are not too badly off relatively speaking although Brisbane has severe water restrictions. Sydney has about 40% in the dams and we've had restrcitions on for a while already. Lots of talk about recycling, desalination and reuse of grey water, homes getting water tanks to ease demand on the dams, all that sort of thing.

Govt is trying to do all the right things and make the right noises. Time will tell. Somebody.....make it rain.
