I know nothing of such matters, but the canal does seem narrow.

If they don't do it, the Nicaraguans may go ahead with their canal and put some competitive fires to their toes. (http://www.answers.com/topic/nicaragua-canal)

I'm glad they took my suggestion. (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20061023.wcanal1023/BNStory/International/home) :)

About 78 per cent of voters favoured of the expansion, with 95 per cent of polling stations counted by the country's electoral tribunal. Turnout among the more than 2.1 million voters was 43 per cent.

I haven't seen any election studies lately, but I think it is comparable to North American turnout, so it's good.

The big ditch needs a makeover. It's old, undersized and high maintenance. While I was there the Gaillard Cut was in perpetual dredging as they whittled down the hill on the east side that was the source of constant landslides. The canal is fascinating and an engineering wonder. But it's behind the times and desperately needs the expansion.

I took a round trip through it back in the spring of '93. It's one of those things you don't forget.

It definitely needs to be enlarged. With ship sizes continually getting larger, I don't see where Panama has a choice.

Do I think it needs to be enlarged to where it can handle the largest of supertankers and container ships? No, but it desperately needs a larger set of locks.
