The Outback, Leon. It's huge.

The U.S. is just a little larger in size (9,631,420 sq. km. vs. 7,686,850 sq km.)

But the population of Australia is about 20 million and the U.S. is close to 300 million.

Hey, I wasn't comparing US, screw that. Look at RUSSIA and even the middle of it in the boonies!

Yeah but look at the huge swaths of Mongolia and China that are as dark as Australia (or even North Korea for that matter).

I think it's all about population density.

38th parallel ftw... it's day and night ;)

Secret Soviet era bases and gulags, poorly made leaky nuclear reactors, and toxic waste. ;)

I think we've seen this image before. It's about population density, but also about geo-politics. I seem to recall you pointed out that you could clearly tell from this image, where the 38th parallel was, and I pointed out you could tell where the Nile crossed the Sudanese border. :)

Yes, the eastern coastline is the most densely populated section by a long way. The coastal strip east of the Great Dividing Range is where most of the rain falls and is less than 50 kms wide in parts. Most of the area west is a lot drier or true desert. Oz is the driest continent on earth. But add a population of only 20 million and a few cities with 1-4 million and there's not many of us left to spread over the bulk of the country. Lots of elbow room down here.
And lots of room for all those sheep, yes.:) We're a lot better off in that regard than the Kiwis whose sheep all suffer from claustrophobia.

I don't think the Claustrophobia is from the size of the country, but rather having to spend extended periods of time with their back legs stuck in some bloke's boots. :)

We love having that jibe at the Kiwis. They're not so keen on it of course and have another opportunity to make US look silly. We play each other in the rugby match of the season on Saturday night. They are one tough team to beat and it's worth celebrating whenever we do.

Before each test match they play they, The All Blacks, perform a Haka, a Maori war dance. Lately they have taken to performing a particular version of the Haka that ends with a throat slitting gesture (http://www.deadspin.com/sports/new-zealand/the-haka-scares-me-189259.php). Have a look at the clip.

I love the Haka! I love the way they do it face to face with the opposing team. Of course, if I were on the other side I would bring a newspaper and read it while they were doing it. :P

Well one test match we turned our backs and were accused of showing a lack of respect to Maori culture. Now we just stand and look. The Springboks, South Africans, stand and looked as belligerent as they can, which is most of the time anyway. :)

Lights are bad. Every watt you can see from space is a wasted watt.
The only halfway decent excuse for having lights visible from the sky is for navigation purposes.

Sorry mate--looks like no celebration this year. NZ All Blacks 13, Aussies 9.

You'll get them next year. One of my oldest friends, (in every way--he is 83), was an elite world class rugby player in his prime. He was also the second ranked indoor sprinter in the world during the same period so you know he was very fast. And he is a Kiwi who despite living in US for the past 35 years wouldn't dream of getting a dual citizenship. He just want to stay a Kiwi. The guy is hardcore.

I was going to post the bad news, eventually.;) We had our chances late in the match but blew a few good opportunities. You have to give it to them, they are a great side. Despite us losing it was an entertaining match to watch, played hard with some great defence, with only 1 try being scored.

I'm wondering if you friend is an islander? They seem to come in two varieties those Islanders....fast as blazes or with necks about 12 inches thick, ideally suited to srummaging. And there seems to be a never ending supply of both types. Good for them, bad for us.:)
