Edit - of course the images won't show!!! ARGH

Which one do you guys like better? <a href="http://www.pbase.com/image/8403460">Color version</a>

OR

<a href="http://www.pbase.com/image/8403443">B&W version</a>

I love this shot, and I would like to submit it at photosig, but I am having a really hard time deciding between the color one and B&W one. Your thoughts?

The B&W has a distinct look to it, especially the eyes. I think I like it better.

Well, I'm going to be a lot of help - I can't choose! :(

They're both incredible shots, and I like each for different reasons. How's that for wishy-washy?

Okay now it works. Go for the color...:)

Misu

Thanks everyone - I went with the color. So far, it's going well.

My original intent was to do B&W and color just the bowl - but I don't know how to do that :(

Have you tried cutting out the bowel, pasting it into a new layer on top of the current one, and then applying a black and white filter to the bottom layer?

HOW DID YOU GUYS DO THAT!?!?!??! PLEASE TEACH ME!!!!

My cat has dark green eyes - I've been DYING to make a shot of him in B&W (duh, he's a white cat, but I don't want the pink in his hears or nose, ya know?) wish just his eyes in color.

Oh please teach me?

Misu

omg, meteor dive, how did you fix his eyes?? I tried for over an hour just to make his eyes more vivid, since my camera is such a POS (automatic camera - I turned off the flash because the light is just too harsh), I didn't get any decent catch lights in his eyes :(

PLEASE SHARE YOUR WISDOM WITH ME :(

in photoshop, you just make the color one the BG, and the B+W the FG. you then erase the parts you want to be color. (well, that's how i do it. there are a few ways, but that's the easiest i know)

as for your harsh flash, try a piece of tissue paper over the flash :).

Misu

tissue paper? Hmm. Dunno if that would work - this is my camera: the <a href="http://www.kodak.com/global/en/digital/easyShare/dx3700/dx3700.jhtml">Kodak DX 3700</a>

I guess I could tape a piece of tissue paper over it... I try not to use it most of the time because of the shadows it casts, and it's just a really ugly, harsh light. Very unflattering.

WOW!!! you took that pic with that camera?!?!?

i can't wait to see what you do with a 5MP camera.............:)

Nice work Scott...Thats more what I was thinking when I said just add the bowl color...the color in the cats eyes and nose add to that pic dramatically...

EXCELLENT WORK FOLKS>>>and great pic Misu...That one is definitely a keeper (the Kitty...hehehehe)

Photos and digital manipulation are mostly a matter of personnal taste. Some like it this way other like it that way...as long as it the way you like...Its always a great pic...

Me too. I manage to do half-decent shots only because I take pics in super duper large mode (this camera doesn't even reach 1 mp file size...it's supposedly a 3.1 mp camera!!) and then play with them in photoshop. I found a program that helps smooth out noise (a serious problem with this pos camera) and then I sharpen (through unsharpen - learned that at photosig and it really does work much nicer than plain old sharpen), then reduce in size by around 70%. That usually gives me decent size pics. But I can't print :( I want to print these images.

there's a plugin for photoshop called <A HREF="http://www.lizardtech.com/solutions/photo/">Genuine Fractals</A> that helps out with enlargements. i hear good things about it, but haven't tried it yet. they have a free evaluation version there. might be worth a look :)

Alright, unfortunately I haven't figured how to link attachments here on this site. I usually write tutorials with images that are attached to the site. From that, I have a knack to upload tons of images. Perhaps you guys can help me out in that.

Anyway, here's small simple tutorial on what I did with our cute cat :)

B & W is the one I would pick.

Thanks md :)

Just have 2 questions for ya -

1. how did you manage to select both eyes at the same time? I try doing that in PS and it won't let me

2. you said you brightened the eye - when I use bright, it makes the pupil a very light grey - it doesn't just brighten the color.

The colors are so important in that shot I think, especially with the pink on the cat. Brings out a clean, fresh look. I think you're doing right leaving it alone.

Make sure you are use the contrast as well. Sorry to point that out, I used both brightness and contrast here. Both values were set to 68. That will tone ("harden") the image, keeping it from bleeding white.

As for the selection, In Paint Shop Pro, I held the shift key while I made the other selection. Hit the shift before making your other selection(s). I believe photoshop will behave in the same manner (I hope...)

Thanks, I will give it a try - if it doesn't work, I know where to find you :) Thanks again.

Thanks :) I just want to bring out the brightness of his eyes just a smidge. His best feature is his eyes ;)
