Is it possible for a US citizen to become a citizen of Australia. I have always been under the impression that they not permit immigration. Or is that just one of those misunderstood myths?

Looks like you can, and here are the eligibility requirements:

If you're a permanent resident, and you've lived in Australia for two or more years you may be eligible to apply for citizenship by grant.

You are eligible if you can answer yes to all of the following questions:

*

Are you a permanent resident?
*

Have you been present in Australia as a permanent resident for two years in the previous five years, including for twelve months in the past two years?

*

Are you of good character?
*

Do you have a basic knowledge of English? (This requirement won't apply if you are aged 50 or over)
*

Do you have an adequate knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of being an Australian citizen? (This requirement won't apply if you are aged 60 or over)
*

Do you intend to live in, or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia?

EASY!

All you have to do is ask after 2 years and you don't even have to give up your US etc Citizenship.

You have to swear allegiance to Australia and QE, but that is only a nudge nudge wink wink.

If anybody is planning a terrorist act it may be better not to mention it at the ceremony, and if you are a 'refugee' based on false information, keep that quiet too, oh, and try to have a kid born in Australia 9 months and one day after you hit the beach.

As long as it isn't Foster's, I could pass that part of the visa process, no sweat ;)

For me Boags Premium is a good Aussie beer. If you see any up your way it's worth getting a few.

Swearing allegiance to another nation is a de facto renunciation of U.S. citizenship, iirc. It might have to be done in the presence of a consular official, but I'm pretty certain that's U.S. law.

Of course, I suppose the U.S. never need know about it. ;)

I recall reading somewhere that one has to renounce their foreign citizenships to obtain US citizenship, but that some countries don't recognize the renounciation that is made as part of the US citizenship process. I personally can't imagine being a citizen of more than one country at the same time, though I'm extremely biased towards the one I'm living in right now...;)

XXX and Vic Bitter are two of the worst beers I've tasted. Cascade, yes, very good. South Australian wine, excellent. Tooheys, ho hum. Swan, not bad.
