Recently, some Australian states have reformed pot laws, moving toward decriminalization or ticketing schemes opposed by the national govt. Now, Health Secretary Pyne says he's reached agreement with states for tougher laws, claiming pot is as dangerous as heroin, amphetamines or cocaine (http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/436/christopherpyne.shtml) and linking pot with mental illness.

I am sort of split on this. On a personal side I can now admit that pot did me not one once of good. It really did mess up my life a bit and made it easier (I feel) for me to get addicted to other things. I also know of many people in the same boat as I.
Yet on the flip side, I now of just as many people that smoke on a daily basis but lead a strong productive life and never touch any other drug.
I will have to go on what I have experienced and say it is dangerous. As dangerous as heroin? Maybe, maybe not.

We just cannot seem to make up our minds on the drug issue. Partly because of the latest research findings influencing policy making and partly because what poltical party is in power at the time has its own agenda. I missed this latest bit of news in your link Leon but I've goit to admit to being a bit surprised by it. We have had a trial heroin injection room in Sydney which hasn't really worked.
This is an issue I should catch up on as my kids are both teenagers, but responsible and well instructed at home and school. But politically and legally I have lost touch with the latest happenings which isn't something I'm happy with, and will do something about.
