This is why I'm a Keynesian, not a monetarist. (http://nytimes.com/iht/2005/09/03/business/IHT-03oil.html) I'm free market to the max, but the government is needed to even out the swings - the central banks seem to agree, since they adjust interest rates to cool their respective economies.
