The sugar industry in Europe and the US is subsidized when it shouldn't be, and that hurts the Third World. Why can't these developed countries focus more on high-technology instead of planting beets?

It does! Sugar fuels the high tech industry (at least the coding and gaming portion of it). Don't forget the caffeine too! :)
