In earlier versions than FF 1, when downloading a new theme from Tools/themes/ get more themes, the download appeared in the Themes pop up window. Click on the newly downloaded theme to "Use theme" and once FF was restarted the new theme was installed. Now it downloads as a RAR file and by passes the Theme window.
I have the WinRAR window open with the new theme ready to extract but can someone tell me where to extract the new theme to? Or better still, how do I revert to the previous procedure where themes are downloaded to the Theme Window?
Theme information and settings is usually stored in your profile, the path should look something like this, but replace 'UserID' with your login ID
C:\Documents and Settings\UserID\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

OK.I extracted to that path which makes perfect sense as a destination, but the theme doesn't appear in the list of available options. Strange that theme downloads now take this WinRAR path when they never did previously.
Hrmmm...I don't normally use themes, but I just downloaded the woodgrained theme and it went right in. All I had to do was restart FF. This issue might likely have to do with your installation having kittens. :)

Yes you could be right. I have FF at work and themes install where they should without a problem. I 'm not keen on re-installing the browser because of a minor issue but its a possibility.
Winrar took over handling the files maybe?
Go into folder options, file types, and see if you need to change " .jar " executible jar files back to being handled by " javaw ".
Also look in files handled by Winrar and see if " .jar " files are listed in there.
One thing I hated about Winrar, you have to say "no" to a ton of stuff when installing, otherwise it wants to handle everything.

In File Types JAR extensions are listed as WinRAR file types and open with WinRAR archiver. So to change what handles the jar extensions has got me stumped. :banghead:
JAR extensions should be handled by your java client...as in Sun Java.

If you never ask you never learn. How do I make the change to get Java to open JARs?

You could uninstall, restart machine then reinstall SUN Java. That's the way I'd do it, rather than a manual reassociation, as it would tend to repair and reset any registry widgets that are out of place.
Under My Compuer, go to Folder Options, file types, and change it there...

I made the change in File Types to be the same as your screen shot Andy. Themes however still want to downlaod as WinRAR.
I haven't tried your Java suggestion yet Cpt. I'll have another look at all this tonight.

Trying to install themes from this site yields a negative. (https://update.mozilla.org/themes/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&os=Windows&id=414)
Clicking in "Install" gets no action at all. Right clicking and save link as downloads the RAR file.
However, downloading themes from here (http://www.spuler.us/index.html)opens the Theme window that previously opened from Tools / Themes in FF, and a new theme is installed in the usual manner.
Perhaps I'm not the only one out of luck with that first link? :(

I clicked on Install Now and it installed just fine. I right clicked, Save Link As, and it is a JAR file. My computer (WinXP) has no file association listed for this file type. Search the web and I found this (http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=jar&Submit3=Go%21).
Try this ... open My Computer. Go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types. See if JAR is listed. If it is, delete it. Reboot and try the Install link again. It should invoke the Firefox theme installer.
If that doesn't work, download the file to your desktop. Open the theme utility in Firefox. Drag and drop the JAR file onto that window and see if it installs that way. Then try to install from the link again.

Your last idea worked. Once it was opened in FF I dragged and dropped and the theme installed. Whatever your empoyer pays you Lisa, its not enough. Thanks.:)
Clicking again on the original link didnt work.
